Opening on Saturday 18 October in Birmingham is photographer Jon Tonks’s first solo UK exhibition, Empire [pictured]. Tonks journeyed across the South Atlantic for several weeks, exploring life on four remote islands – the British Overseas Territories of Ascension Island, Tristan da Cunha, the Falkland Islands and St Helena. The series was awarded The Royal Photographic Society’s Vic Odden Award this year, and a book of the work was published by Dewi Lewis in June 2014. Empire, the exhibition, co-produced by the Library of Birmingham, Midlands Art Centre (Mac), Ffotogallery in Cardiff, and Impressions Gallery in Bradford, will be on show at Mac in Birmingham until 04 January 2015. [bjp_ad_slot]The second edition of multimedia and photography festival Night Contact takes place on Saturday 18 October. Running as part of Brighton Photo Biennial 2014, Night Contact will showcase a range of photography and mixed-media projections in indoor and outdoor spaces across central Brighton. Artists include: Jason Fulford, Melanie Manchot, Taiyo Onorato & Nico Krebs, Joanna Piotrowska, Rick Morris Pushinsky, and Isabelle Wenzel & Michel Kouider, among others. Also showing on the same evening is Night Contact’s winning commission – experimental film Silent Fore to Aft by Tom Pope and Terrence Smith.
Brighton-based Miniclick Talks continues its Another Way of Looking programme of events this weekend as part of the Brighton Photo Biennial (BPB14), and Brighton Photo Fringe (BPF14). On Saturday 18 October, Miniclick hosts a free day-long Play-Doh workshop to celebrate Eleanor Macnair’s new photobook, Photographs Rendered in Play-Doh, published by MacDonaldStrand and Photomonitor. And on 18 and 19 October visitors are invited to come down to the The Photo Publisher’s Market, organised by Miniclick, BPB14 and BPF14, to peruse photobooks by emerging and established photographers. There will also be a series of talks by photographers and publishers, who include: Dewi Lewis, Harry Hardie of Here Press, and Lisa Barnard, among others.
Taking place in London on 18 October is a day-long symposium on the theme, ‘Passion and Photography: The Idea and the Instinct’. Speakers Paul Hill, Anna Fox, David Bate, Laura Pannack, and Peter Kennard share their thoughts about the medium, and discuss the nature of passion and creativity. Location: Sir John Cass Faculty of Art, Architecture and Design, Central House, London Metropolitan University. A day-long symposium will take place at Nottingham’s Djanogly Art Gallery on Saturday 18 October in conjunction with the current exhibition And Now it’s Dark: American Night Photography. The exhibition features work by Jeff Brouws, Todd Hido, Will Steacy, René Burri, Jack Delano and William Klein, all of whom have photographed nocturnal spaces. Steacy and Brouws will be taking part in the symposium, as will Simon Baker, the Tate’s curator of photography and international art.
