Aart Verrips is a South African photographer born in Durban and based in Johannesburg, South Africa. Formerly a pastry chef, Verrips began to build a career in fashion photography, developing a distinctive and decidedly bold visual aesthetic that mixes provocation with commerciality. His time spent in haute cuisine provided him with an attention to detail that has inspired his approach and is evident in his work. Speaking on his move into fashion photography, Verrips says he was drawn by the opportunity to “create a different world in one single frame”, allowing him to “make the impossible seem possible.”
Throughout his career, he has collaborated with some of South Africa’s most celebrated young design talent, as well as an impressive and growing list of commercial clients including H&M, adidas, Levi’s, Burberry and Vogue Eyewear, and he was the focus of a 2017 solo exhibition at Johannesburg’s Hazard Gallery, in which he questioned masculine beauty standards and society’s eternal desire for perfection.
